Manhattan Skyline

I was up in New Jersey last weekend for my sister's bridal shower, and took these photos of the Manhattan skyline from the Chart House restaurant in Weehawken.  I noticed that I had to do some post-processing, because none of my horizons were straight.  If anyone has any tips on how to keep your photos straight (without a tripod), let me know!

Still Life: Chocolate Chip Cookies

My first digital photography class assignment was to do a still life. I decided to try my first attempt at "food porn"... I think the cookies tasted pretty good, but I don't know if I really caught that with the camera. I learned in class that shooting in Auto, Program, and all of the Scenic modes is "bad," and that most photographers spend most of their time either in Manual or Aperture Priority (Av on Canons). These shots were taken on my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi using the standard kit lens (Aperture f/5.6, Exposure Time 0.040s (1/25), ISO 800, no flash). I cropped all three and did some slight post-processing, using the basic photo editor in Picasa.

Stone Zoo 4/24/09

Taking pictures at a zoo can be hit or miss. Sometimes the animals are all in hiding and you can't get a good look, or they just aren't being interesting. Other times you get a great shot up close and personal.

North Carolina Zoo, October 2008

At the time, I only had my Canon A710, but still managed to get this pretty cool shot of an elephant really close up. The NC Zoo is more like a giant nature preserve, very wide open spaces, and MILES of trails. We were exhausted by the end of the day! I'm hoping to go back again this fall, once the heat and humidity subside.

Roger Williams Zoo 8/16/09

Not an exhibit, but still an animal at the zoo... Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a great mommy and baby picture, but here's Mom and Dad Giraffe... Xander loves fish. I found them to be difficult to photograph what with the glass in the way...

Birds for Stef

Took the kids and some friends to the Aviary this week. Got some birds for you! Hard to catch moving birds with a multipurpose lens while chasing a toddler... but we had a good time!
