Raptor Weekend

Back in September I took Xander to "Raptor Weekend" at the Audubon Society. I was a bit disappointed that he wasn't actually at all interested in the birds, but I did manage to snap a few photos before he became totally bored.

Snowflakes

I took a few quick pictures before I cleared my car off to go to work. I wanted to capture the perfect snowflakes on my windshield.

Wind Chime

One of the things I like about going to the Roger Williams Park Zoo is that there are many beautiful flowers to photograph. On a recent trip, I also found this wind chime that struck my fancy...

Website Recommendation: Digital Photography School

I haven't had the chance to take a digital photography class, but I have found the Digital Photography School website to be helpful. The blog posts are quick reads on a specific topic, and they provide example photos to demonstrate the technique being discussed. They also have assignments so that you can try a technique and post the results for others to see.

Manhattan Skyline

I was up in New Jersey last weekend for my sister's bridal shower, and took these photos of the Manhattan skyline from the Chart House restaurant in Weehawken.  I noticed that I had to do some post-processing, because none of my horizons were straight.  If anyone has any tips on how to keep your photos straight (without a tripod), let me know!

Still Life: Chocolate Chip Cookies

My first digital photography class assignment was to do a still life. I decided to try my first attempt at "food porn"... I think the cookies tasted pretty good, but I don't know if I really caught that with the camera. I learned in class that shooting in Auto, Program, and all of the Scenic modes is "bad," and that most photographers spend most of their time either in Manual or Aperture Priority (Av on Canons). These shots were taken on my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi using the standard kit lens (Aperture f/5.6, Exposure Time 0.040s (1/25), ISO 800, no flash). I cropped all three and did some slight post-processing, using the basic photo editor in Picasa.

Accidental Self-portait

I was trying to take a picture of this little winding stream and caught a picture of my own shadow...
